Tuning & Service Rates

Flat prices, quoted before I lift the lid

Updated October 2026

Standard tuning

A440 for an upright or a grand, up to 15 cents off pitch. About 75 minutes, including a check of the pedals and the key action.

$145

Pitch raise

For a piano more than 15 cents flat — usually one that sat unused for years or just came off a moving truck. The piano is tuned twice in the same visit so it holds.

+$85

Repair visit

Sticking keys, a broken string, a squeaking pedal, a bench that wobbles. $95 covers the first hour, $60 each hour after that. Parts billed at cost, with the price agreed before any work starts.

$95first hour

Voicing & regulation

Two hours on hammers, let-off and key dip for a piano that feels heavy, uneven or too bright in a small room.

$180

Pre-purchase inspection

Before you buy a used piano: soundboard, pinblock, bridges and what it will cost to bring it up to pitch. A written summary the same day.

$120

No travel charge within 25 miles of downtown Bozeman. Beyond that it is 70¢ a mile each way, agreed on the phone first.

How the day runs

Appointments are booked in two-hour windows, and the last weekday tuning starts at 3 pm so it is finished before five. Saturday holds two slots.

Most weeks have a same-week opening. October through December fills fastest, so call a two weeks ahead if the piano is for a recital or a holiday.

Pianos are tuned in your home, not in a shop. I carry the tools, a spare set of strings and a drop cloth.

Service area

Where I tune

Bozeman first, then out along the valley. Anything inside 25 miles of downtown carries no travel charge.

Schools, churches and studios: a block of three or more pianos in one trip is billed at $125 each.

Every visit

What comes with a tuning

Tuned by ear and checked by meter

Each string set by ear for the room it lives in, then measured against a tuning app so the pitch is where it should be.

Action and pedals looked over

Keys, hammers and all three pedals get a quick check. Anything loose is tightened on the spot at no extra charge.

A written note left behind

Pitch readings, what was adjusted, and what to watch next year — on paper, on the piano, for your records.

An honest yes or no

If a repair is not worth the money on your instrument, you will hear that plainly instead of an invoice.

From the valley

What people say after the lid closes

Our 1912 upright had not been tuned since my mother owned it. Two visits later it holds pitch and my daughter practices without being asked.

Hannah V. · Bozeman

Mara found a cracked hammer shank during a routine tuning and fixed it the same afternoon. No upsell, just a straight answer and a fair bill.

Grant P. · Belgrade

The studio piano gets played eight hours a day. It is tuned every term and it has never sounded better than it does now.

Questions

How much does piano tuning cost in Bozeman?

$145 for a standard tuning of an upright or a grand, flat, with no travel charge inside 25 miles of downtown. A piano that is badly flat needs a pitch raise as well, which adds $85 and happens in the same visit.

How often should a piano be tuned?

Once a year for a piano that is played, twice for a school or a teacher’s studio. A piano that is never played still drifts with the seasons — Bozeman’s dry winters pull pitch down — so every second year is the minimum I would leave one.

My piano has not been tuned in ten years. Can it be saved?

Usually, yes. I check the pinblock and the strings first. If it is more than 15 cents flat, the visit becomes a tuning plus a pitch raise: the piano is brought up roughly, then tuned properly, which takes about two hours and $230 in total. If the pinblock cannot hold tension, I will tell you that at the door and charge only the visit.

Do you tune grands as well as uprights?

Both, and consoles, spinets and studio pianos too. The price is the same for either — $145 — because the work is the same length.

How do I book a tuning?

Call (406) 555-0142 between 9 am and 5 pm, Tuesday to Saturday, or email tuning@larkspurpiano.example.com. There is no form on this page. Tell me the make, the model if you know it, and when it was last tuned, and I will offer the next two-hour window.

Do you come out to Livingston or Big Sky?

Livingston on Fridays and Saturdays, Big Sky by arrangement. Both are past the 25-mile line, so travel is 70¢ a mile each way and is quoted on the phone before anything is booked.

What should I do before you arrive?

Clear the top of the piano and anything within a couple of feet of the keyboard, and leave the room at roughly its normal temperature. If the piano has just moved, let it sit a week before the tuning so it can settle.
